Play Off Winners!
Stur 2 Wells City 2
Pens: 6-5
On a gorgeous sunny day we welcomed Wells City to Barnettβs Field. A crowd of 482 paying customers watched this play-off final, the first half of which was dominated by Wells City for the first ten minutes. The Cherries got a foothold though and then controlled the rest of the half, which ended 0-0. The second half is where it all happened – just three minutes in to the half and Wells scored to take the lead, and weβre looking dominant for a good while. Gradually though the game swing towards Stur and on 71 minutes a wicked cross from George Coleman got turned into his own net by one of the Wells defenders to level the scores. Just eight minutes later, a corner was headed firmly into the Wells net by Ash Clarke to take a 2-1 lead.
Tragedy struck though when a free kick to Wells on the edge of the area was converted to level the scores at 2-2 on 90+2 minutes.
Despite efforts from both sides the refereeβs whistle brought both teams together for penalty kicks. Wells went first, saved by Theo! Stur scored their next three, as did Wells. Wellsβ keeper saved from Bevis, then both scored their next one.
A miss and a score from both teams followed, and then Theo saved the next one meaning Aaron Lane-Laneyβs final scored penalty won the shootout for the Cherries 6-5.
