Cowley leads the way!
A 300 mile round trip to Cornwall for an FA Vase encounter with Newquay AFC on Saturday provided the travelling Stur supporters with a superb performance and a ball in the draw for the second round.
After an early scare when a home forward found himself one on one with Theo Crane in the Cherries 18 yard box. Crane did just enough to keep the ball out of the goal and gratefully grabbed the ball on the goal line.
After that the Cherries pretty much took hold of the game, creating a few chances during the next half hour. Then on 38 minutes a cross flashed across the Newquay goal to be met with a firm header from Ben Cowley to open the scoring (last time Cowley scored was at Avonmouth two seasons ago). Cowley continued to link up well with the forward play during the match and was awarded man of the match by players and spectators alike.
Just as the first half was drawing to a close George Adair-Charlton added to the scoreline to send Stur in 2-0 up at the break. Another good cross, another good far post header.
The second half produced some more good football from the Cherries, but it wasnβt until 75 minutes that Sean Hart got on the scoreboard with a typically good strike to take us to 3-0 and game over.
Newquay however had other ideas and three minutes before time got through what had been a robust Stur defence to grab a goal.
Looked like a tense last few minutes, but then on 90+4 minutes George βWβ Coleman took advantage of the home defence and took the ball past the keeper to score the final goal of the day.
Final score 4-1, great performance from the whole squad on a day when the home side were probably not at their best.
Lots of good performances and probably the biggest smile of the day from Ben Cowley as man of the match. Into the hat for the second round proper draw on Monday.
