Five of the best

Sturminster Newton United 5 East Cowes Victoria 0

On a lovely sunny afternoon at the We Heat South stadium, we welcomed East Cowes Victoria for the first time. A few early skirmishes, but nothing much to test either keeper. Then on 13 minutes Stur broke through two to one on the visitors goalkeeper and a simple sideways pass to Sean Hart allowed him to open the scoring from close range.

After this moment of excitement, the first half went a bit quiet, without a lot of exciting opportunities until shortly before half time when Ben Knight slammed home a loose ball to increase the lead to 2-0.

The second half started much brighter with football breaking out at both ends. The visitors were not without chances, but Theo Crane in the Cherries goal had a quiet afternoon. It was not until the last ten minutes that the game produced goals. Adam Hall with a good individual effort to add a third goal on 84 minutes, Jack Atkins with a cross that crept in under the bar on 87 minutes for 4-0 (despite being claimed by Nick Hewlett, who maybe got a touch but after the ball had crossed the line!), and then finally possibly the best of the bunch from George Coleman after he side stepped a couple of challenges and shaped nicely to slam the ball into the back of the net from around 18 yards to end the game at 5-0.

Great performance from Stur when the game wasn’t especially lively. Hard luck to the visitors finding their opponents in goal scoring form.

A good three points, and we go again at the We Heat South stadium on Tuesday evening when we host Bournemouth Poppies.

Today’s man of the match was awarded to Will Guppy.
