Cheddar 1 Cherries 4

A very hot evening visit to Cheddar this Tuesday evening started well,

with the Cherries creating a lot of pressure early on, and seemingly sustaining that pressure winning 11 corners in the first half but without an end result.  It was not all one way traffic though, and the home side looked dangerous on the break.  Late in the half as the Cheddar forward broke through the defence did enough to put some pressure on but could only watch as the ball rolled past the keeper and bumped into the post.  Fortunately the ball was then cleared.  There were a couple of penalty shouts from the Cherries, but ultimately the half time break came with neither side having broken the deadlock.
Barely had the spectators gathered for the second half and Stur gained their 12th corner of the match which was gratefully put away by skipper Nick Hewlett.  At last we had taken the lead!  Just three minutes later Elliot Bevis added to the scoreline as he beat defender and keeper to make it 2-0.    Cheddar continued to look dangerous on the break though and their efforts paid off just after the hour – 2-1 Stur.

The next 18 minutes were a bit tense for the spectators as both sides kept pressing, and the home side drawing a great save from Theo Crane to keep the score at 2-1.

Then on 80 minutes Will Guppy somehow managed to score with a looping kick from near the bye-line leaving the keeper stranded.  3-1 Stur.

Then with very little time left, Ben Quincey-Weale was brought down in the box and Elliot Bevis scored his second of the night from the spot to make the final score Cheddar 1 – Sturminster Newton United 4.

Next up is another home match on Saturday 16th August against newly promoted Almondsbury, who so far have 2 wins from their 3 matches.
Hope to see a good number supporting us!
